View Full Version : My wifes Giant Talon 29er Build Thread
We do it for jeeps... why not for bikes too? Hell, you'd be surprised how much money you can spend in mods for bikes (don't ask how much my Easton wheelset was )
So here she is in stock form. ALL 31.28 lbs of her!

Next up is a used 2010 Marzocchi 44 Micro Ti fork that I scored on eBay for a price i couldn't pass up!!
The fork came set at 120mm travel so I just broke it down to install a spacer, thereby making it 100mm travel. It's not on the bike yet because I'm waiting for the oil to get there. I had to order the oil because no one locally had what I needed :(

^^ Last picture there has the reverse spring assembly back together with the addition spacer (towards the right of the picture)
Coming up:
Tubeless conversion
Marz-44 Install
I'm hoping that those two mods will get her down to under 29.5 lb. I could have went with a lighter fork like the Rockshox Reba, but even used versions of those were $350-$400. That Marz was $260 shipped.. so if its .25 lb heavier than the Reba, we'll suffer! lol

take the air out of her tires, that will drop the weight!
I didn't take the air out of her tires.... but i did take the tubes out!!

Tubeless conversion dropped .30 pounds.... went from 30.40 to 30.10... getting closer to that 29 lb mark!!

BIG time weight savings by changing out the fork!!!
Stock fork = 5.80
Marz 44 = 4.44
Weight Savings = 1.36
Estimated weight after fork change = 30.10 - 1.36 = 28.74

Matt, where did you get the scale? I'll need to start weighing gear and stuff now.

Thanks man, it's $10 in shipping :( going to see what one in store costs when I go in.
Damn man you need to sign up for Prime. Free 2 day shipping... that scale cost me less than $13 shipped when I ordered.

That costs money right? I don't shop there enough to justify it.
Yeah it does... i never used to shop Amazon until I got a year of Prime membership for free (it runs up in April). I've saved so much money and gotten stuff shipped so fast that I'll be paying for the membership.
Snagged a wheelset off a NJ bike forum!!
I'll be picking them up in a few hours. They're the same wheels I have on my bike... Easton Haven 29 UST
For $350, I could not turn them down.... they normally cost more than we spend on Jeep wheels

Dropped another 1.36 lbs!! (kind of funny how that worked out)

Stock wheelset = 5.32
Haven wheelset = 4.02
(1.30, the extra .06 was from using less sealant inside)

I weighed my bike its 33 LBS :p
Got her bike down to 26.94 lbs.
I swapped her pedals out for my old TIME Atac's and snagged a used set of Elixir CR brakes off a local mtb forum. The brakes didn't drop much weight, but they perform a zillion times better (she can actually lock up her tires now).

Never updated this thread. Her mothers-day present.... Race Face crankset.

Just an FYI.... i'm probably going to sell this bike :(
Our "plan" for riding together on Fridays didn't pan out like I expected and she only rode this bike twice. So as im sitting here thinking of ways to pay our vehicles off sooner to get rid of monthly payments, this is the first thing that popped in my head. I can always build another one later on when the kids are older and don't have double-daycare payments.
It's a MEN's size Small. So works well for guys & gals.... i'd say 5'0" - 5'7". 5'8" you'll probably want a medium frame. (though for what i'd sell it for, it would be worth buying and swapping the components onto another frame lol)
